Single Serving Coffee Makers: Keurig vs. Tassimo

Keurig or Tassimo, what is the best single serving coffee maker for you? In the world of single serving coffee makers, two brands have filtered to the top: Keurig and Tassimo. Both offer consumers an assortment of cartridge options (called K-Cups for Keurig and T-Discs for Tassimo) that can be inserted into the coffee maker to be brewed, and both brands have established loyal followings. Each has its strengths and flaws. The one you choose depends on your preferences,

Let's Talk About the Price on these Single Serving Coffee Makers

Keurig or Tassimo? Except in the case of the money-saving My-K Cup (for Keurig's coffee makers), price is not much of a factor. Granted, specialty coffees cost more to make than a simple cup of coffee, but that's true in any coffee shop. Both Keurig and Tassimo come in a range of models, too, priced according to consumer demands. Considering the money saved by not purchasing beverages outside of the home (or by not pouring out half-full pots), both machines can pay for themselves in short order.

But comparing to a classic espresso machine, these little discs you need to buy adds up quickly. Very quickly. So you will need to decide if the time you save is worth the cost and pollution factor (these little discs are producing more waste than a bag of coffee).

Keurig Single Serve Coffee Makers - For K-Cups

For those who like a basic cup of coffee, a Keurig will likely meet your needs. Keurig offers a wide variety of flavored and non-flavored coffees, plus a few other options such as hot chocolate, apple cider, and tea. Additionally, for those who prefer a brand of coffee not available in pre-sealed K-cups, Keurig users can opt to fill the reusable "My-K Cup" with their own special blend of coffee grounds.

Keurig K40 Elite Brewing System, 6 cups

This is the most affordable (under 100$) Keurig machine. If you plan on buying your first single serving coffee maker, there is no point in buying the most expensive, top of the line machine first. Especially if you are unsure your going to like it. You might be back to your drip coffee after all. This one is cheap, designed for the K-Cups (when shopping, make sure you buy a Keurig that is actually made for K-Cups, some are just regular espresso machines) and offers a one year guarantee. The size is attractive too for those having limited space. It measures 13-1/4 by 10 by 13 inches. If you like your coffee quite strong, you will need to select the smaller size cup when brewing your coffee, otherwise it might be too weak for your taste.

Possibly one of the most interesting aspect of the Keurig single serving coffee makers: the My K-Cup. My K-Cup is a reusable filter that will allow you to use your own coffee and tea instead of the disposable K-Cups. It's economical, more friendly for the environment (that's the biggest selling point for me) and useful when you run out of K-Cups. Amazon often offer it at a discounted price and you may end up paying less than on the official Keurig online store.

Tassimo Single Serve Coffee Makers

Tassimo owners do not have the same diversity of coffees available, but they do have access to better options for specialty coffees. For those who prefer to start their day with a latte, cappuccino, or espresso, Tassimo is definitely the way to go. Using the barcode printed on each cartridge, Tassimo coffee makers always make a perfect cup. Plus, while the selection is not as varied as with Keurig, Tassimo does offer an array of coffees, hot chocolates, and teas.

If you are using hard water, you may need to descale your single serving coffee maker on a regular basis to keep your machine making the best coffee cup possible.
